Schedule of Events

Pre-Event Guided Hike on the Buckeye Trail/North Country National Scenic Trail

Hosted by the Buckeye Trail Association
(Meet at Miner’s Statue at 116 West Main Street)
This loop hike will cover approximately 3 miles in the Wayne National Forest.  Expect to be back to town by Noon.

Food Hall Opens
(Tecumseh Commons)

Speakeasy Opens in Harigle Garage with local moonshine, wine, mead and microbrews available. (ID required, most be consumed on premise)

Exhibits, Vendors Open (West Main Street & Tecumseh Commons)

Children’s Zone Opens (East Main Street • Gazebo)

Southern Perry County Quilt Show
(Masonic Lodge • West Main Street)
Choose your favorite quilt by casting a ballot for the People’s Choice Award!

Taverns of the Mineral Region Panel
(Tecumseh Commons • 114 West Main Street)
Participants will reflect on memorable taverns and tavern operators of the mining towns in the Little Cities of Black Diamonds region, from Nelsonville to New Straitsville and dozens more in between.

A mix of traditional and contemporary music is provided by these regulars to LCBD Day who bring banjo, harp and hammer dulcimer along to enhance their show.  A few tunes to reinforce the Temperance & Tavern theme are planned!

Shawnee Taverns & Sinners Tour
(Meet at Miner’s Statue • West Main Street)
Local Historian Rob Dishon will share stories of Shawnee Taverns and the underbelly of the town during its boom era and beyond.  See where the town’s many taverns were located and hear amusing and provocative stories of Shawnee night life.  

Bituminous & Booze
(Tecumseh Commons)
WOUB Radio personalities Ivan and Deanna Tribe will spin they vinyl on old time music that relates to liquor consumption and coal mining.  Color commentary will accompany each piece!

Agitate, Educate & Legislate: Understanding the Temperance Movement
Led by Bill Merman of the Westerville Historical Society (Westerville was the national headquarters of the Temperance Movement) a panel of historians discuss this historic era, Prohibition and how these matters relate to consumption in contemporary America.

Temperance Parade
(Gather @ Miners Statue in Park Adjacent to Tecumseh Commons)
Join in a re-enactment of the Womens Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League’s March for Temperance as banners and costumed characters will join with contemporaries to march down Main Street to approach the front doors of the Speakeasy to demand the drinkers change their ways.

Annual Little Cities Sprit Awards

Join the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council as they recognize three individuals who demonstrate the spirit of the Little Cities microregion (coal towns at the corners of Hocking, Athens, Perry and Morgan Counties) by contributing to civic life and the stewardship and development of the region’s historical, cultural and environmental assets.  

Micro Movements of Today (Local Microdistilleries, Microbreweries, Vineyards)

Meet some of the fine entrepreneurs who are reviving the production of alcoholic beverages in the region ranging from a moonshine distillery and microbreweries to vineyards and the making of fermented mead.

So. Perry Quilt Show: People’s Choice Awards Announced

Jesse Henry in Concert

Columbus musician Jesse Henry returns to Shawnee for a one-hour concert to close out the day.  His mix of soulful ballads, upbeat indie rock and blues music demonstrates his outstanding talents as the lead singer for the popular Columbus band the Spike Drivers.  Jesse will perform “Too Tough to Die in Old Shawnee: the song that was written earlier this year during an experimental song writing gatherings held in Shawnee.

      Little Cities of Black Diamonds Day is on the third Sunday in October each year, making it October 19, 2014 this coming year. We hope that you can join us!
